Ingredients
- 1 large store-bought angel food cake (10-12 oz), cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1.5 lbs fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 pint fresh blueberries
- 2 (3.4 oz) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
- 3 cups cold milk (for pudding)
- 1 (8 oz) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (like Cool Whip)
Instructions
- Prepare the fruit: Gently wash strawberries and blueberries. Hull and slice the strawberries.
- Prepare the pudding: In a large bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes until thickened. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Create the creamy layer: Gently fold half of the thawed whipped topping into the vanilla pudding until just combined. Reserve the remaining whipped topping for the top layer.
- Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle bowl or clear glass serving bowl (about 3-4 quart capacity), place a layer of angel food cake cubes (approximately half of the cake).
- Spoon half of the creamy pudding mixture evenly over the cake layer.
- Arrange half of the sliced strawberries over the pudding layer, followed by half of the blueberries.
- Repeat the layers: Add the remaining angel food cake cubes, followed by the remaining creamy pudding mixture, then the remaining sliced strawberries, and finally the remaining blueberries.
- Top the trifle with the reserved whipped topping, spreading it smoothly over the fruit.
- Chill the trifle: Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the cake to soften, ensuring a perfectly moist and delicious dessert.
