4th of July Fruit Platter – Easy American Flag Recipe
Celebrate Independence Day with a splash of color and a burst of freshness! This 4th of July Fruit Platter transforms simple fruits into an impressive and edible American flag. It’s incredibly easy to assemble, making it the perfect festive treat for any backyard BBQ or patriotic gathering.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs fresh strawberries, hulled and halved (or sliced)
- 1 pint fresh blueberries, rinsed
- 3 large bananas, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds (or 1 cup plain Greek yogurt / whipped cream for white stripes)
- 1 large rectangular platter (approx. 12×18 inches or similar proportion)
Instructions
- Gently wash all strawberries and blueberries. Hull and halve (or slice) the strawberries. Rinse the blueberries and pat them dry.
- Peel and slice the bananas into 1/2-inch rounds. If using Greek yogurt or whipped cream, have it ready in a piping bag or spoon for spreading.
- Choose a clean, rectangular platter that will serve as your canvas. The longer side should be about twice the length of the shorter side for flag proportions.
- Start by forming the blue ‘union’ (the star field) in the top left corner of your platter. Arrange the blueberries closely together to form a rectangle, roughly covering about one-quarter to one-third of the platter’s width and slightly less than half of its height.
- Next, begin creating the red and white stripes. Below the blueberry section and extending to the right, create your first red stripe using the halved strawberries. Arrange them in neat rows, packing them tightly.
- Below the first red stripe, create a white stripe using the sliced bananas. Arrange the banana slices closely together to form a solid line. If using Greek yogurt or whipped cream, pipe or spread a smooth, even stripe.
- Continue alternating red (strawberries) and white (bananas/yogurt) stripes across the entire platter, ensuring the stripes are of relatively even thickness.
- Aim for 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes if space allows, starting and ending with red stripes for a classic flag look. Adjust the length of the red and white stripes that run alongside the blue field to align visually.
- Chill the platter in the refrigerator until ready to serve. For best results, assemble no more than 1-2 hours before serving, especially if using bananas to prevent browning.
